While today’s public health announcement and ease of COVID-19 restrictions were welcomed by many, news of restaurants and snack bars being able to open until 5pm from 10 May sparked outrage amongst certain restaurateurs and business owners.
Amongst others, Chef Marvin Gauci took to Facebook to share his concern with the issue and stated that he feels “that the system, organisation and authorities are destroying what’s left in the industry”.
Meanwhile, The Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) noted that while positive, today’s announcement and reopening conditions ‘will not be of much help to the majority of restaurants’ as opening for lunch may not make much business sense for most.
Gauci highlighted that many small restaurants are closing down as local business continue to struggle with the pandemic with one comment in particular saying that many work until or past 5PM, meaning that restaurants will not win much from the measures.
