Olympic Triathlete Vomits 10 Times After Seine River Swim

Olympic Triathlete Vomits 10 Times After Seine River Swim
Aug 3 2024 Share

Tyler Mislawchuk, a Canadian triathlete, went viral after vomiting 10 times following the men’s triathlon at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The incident occurred after he swallowed a significant amount of water while swimming in the Seine River, which left his stomach overly full.

Mislawchuk explained that this, combined with the intense physical exertion of the race, led to his post-race sickness. Despite the unpleasant aftermath, he managed to finish 9th in the competition.

Mislawchuk, who previously withdrew from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics due to an Achilles injury, expressed no regrets about his effort, stating, “I have no ‘what ifs’ on the day, I went for it.”

The weather, much warmer than what he’s used to in Canada, also played a role in his condition during the race.

The Seine River’s water quality was questioned, especially after heavy rain led to unsafe levels of fecal matter, delaying the race.

Although Paris officials assured the water’s safety, some athletes, including Belgian triathlete Jolien Vermeylen, criticised the decision to hold the swim in the Seine, citing concerns over its cleanliness.
