22 More Local Applicants Benefit from Screen Support Scheme

The Screen Support Scheme continues to boost Malta’s creative sector, with 22 additional local film and audiovisual projects receiving a combined €860,000 in funding. This brings the total investment in Maltese productions to over €2.6 million in just one year.
The announcement follows a statement earlier this year by Minister for Culture, Lands and Local Government Owen Bonnici, who confirmed that projects qualifying under the scheme that closed on 15 April would all receive funding.
Initially, 36 projects had been awarded close to €2 million. With today’s decision, the number of beneficiaries has risen to 55 projects, with three appearing in both rounds after receiving partial funding in the first.
Minister Bonnici described the move as an exceptional but necessary step, saying it would have been a shame for high-potential projects to miss out.
“Today’s decision is the right one. We saw so much talent within the Maltese and Gozitan creative community that we felt it essential to extend funding support,” he said.
The Minister added that total investment in local film and audiovisual productions has now reached a record-breaking €2.66 million.
Arts Council Malta Executive Chairperson Dr Luke Dalli also praised the scheme, noting that record submissions demonstrated the strength of Malta’s industry. He said the Council was determined to ensure every deserving project received support.
Meanwhile, applications remain open for the scheme’s ninth strand, focusing on international promotion, with €100,000 earmarked for domestic film promotion by the end of 2025. Applications close on 18 November 2025.
