In a remarkable achievement, 21 Maltese trekkers made history as the largest Maltese group to ever reach Everest Base Camp, guided by renowned athlete and mountaineer Ryan Mex. This inspiring feat not only highlights their physical endurance but also demonstrates the resilience of ordinary individuals from Malta, a country situated at sea level, in conquering some of the world’s highest altitudes.
The trailblazing team included Patricia Borg, Charlene Ciantar, Suzanne Chetcuti Ganado, Paul Falzon, Pierre Farrugia, Ryan Farrugia, Steve Farrugia, Emanuel Gatt, Teddie Gatt, Nicky Grech, Elena Mallia, Maria Mileshkevich, Mario Muscat, Dario Pace Taliana, Pauline Pace, Alessandro Salerno, Ryan Theuma, Tasha Theuma, Jean Vella, and Andre Zammit.
Over the course of 12 days, the group successfully trekked through the treacherous terrain of the Himalayas, facing various challenges along the way, but their determination and teamwork saw them overcome every obstacle in their path.
Not only did the group reach Everest Base Camp, but two members of the team, Andre Zammit and Dario Pace Taliana, went on to summit Island Peak, a towering 6,189 meters (20,305 feet) above sea level, after an intense 14-hour push to the summit.
