Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi Dead After Helicopter Crash

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi Dead After Helicopter Crash
May 20 2024 Share

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and six others, died in a helicopter crash in foggy weather near the Azerbaijan border.

The wreckage was found early Monday after an overnight search. Raisi, a 63-year-old hardliner, lost contact with the aircraft in fog-covered mountains. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appointed First Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber as interim president and Ali Bagheri Kani as acting foreign minister, announcing five days of public mourning.

The crash occurred near Jolfa, about 375 miles northwest of Tehran, as Raisi traveled in East Azerbaijan province. More than 70 rescue teams were deployed, with resources from the Iranian army and Revolutionary Guards. Raisi had been in Azerbaijan inaugurating a dam with President Ilham Aliyev.

International reactions included condolences and support from Iraq, Qatar, and regional rival Saudi Arabia. The EU and the US also followed the incident closely. Raisi, a protégé of Khamenei and former judiciary head, had been Iran’s president since 2021.

His tenure was marked by severe sanctions, mass protests, and controversial policies, including high-level uranium enrichment and support for proxy groups in the Middle East.

Athlete Marko Bezzina achieved his goal of running 200km in just 32 hours as part of the Three Islands Run, a challenge he designed to inspire others and raise awareness for mental health and cystic fibrosis.

The adventure, hailed as a resounding success, involved a 51km trail run around Gozo, a 2km SUP crossing to Comino, an 8km trail run around Comino, another 5.5km SUP crossing to Malta, and concluded with a 139km run around Malta’s perimeter.

A dedicated team of over 25 volunteers, mostly athletes, supported Bezzina, demonstrating the power of unity, passion, gratitude, a positive mindset, and strong teamwork. Marko began his journey at 5:00 AM at Ħondoq Bay in Gozo, running continuously without sleep.

His fellow athlete, Miguel Mifsud, captured the moment of completion and praised Bezzina’s perseverance and determination. Miguel had himself completed a 100km run for Caritas earlier in April.

Marko expressed deep gratitude to his volunteers, family, and supporters for their massive support throughout the adventure. This remarkable feat was not only a personal achievement for Bezzina but also an effort to inspire a healthy lifestyle and raise funds for the Children’s and Adolescents’ Mental Health Association, Richmond, and the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.
