The inaugural edition of the Malta School Games came to a successful close this week with a special ceremony held during the Public Service Expo 2025 at MFCC, Ta’ Qali. This landmark event united thousands of children from schools across Malta and Gozo, marking a significant milestone for youth sport in the country. Around 2,000 students from 50 state, church, and independent schools took part in the finals, having been selected from thousands of participants in the preliminary rounds held earlier in the year.

Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation, Clifton Grima, praised all involved, stating, “I congratulate not only the winners, but every participant and educator who made this first edition of the Malta School Games such a success. We witnessed the spirit of sportsmanship, student unity, and a strong desire to achieve.”

The week began with a festive opening at the Ta’ Qali Basketball Complex, with the Games officially launched in February via a symbolic torch relay across schools. The event served as a celebration of holistic education—nurturing both physical abilities and personal growth.

Minister Grima emphasised the Games as a symbol of ongoing investment in sport and education, from enhanced PE programmes to better school facilities. He described the initiative as a “celebration of friendship, discipline, and passion for sport,” encouraging inclusion, teamwork, and lifelong values.

National finals took place in a range of disciplines including football, basketball, handball, volleyball, athletics, and more, coinciding with the wider Public Service Expo 2025.
