19 Hunters Caught Trapping Birds

Authorities in Malta and Gozo have apprehended 19 individuals engaged in illegal bird trapping, following reports and video evidence gathered by the Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS). A total of 85 live finches were confiscated, along with 40 sets of clap nets and 10 electronic bird callers.

Among those caught was an individual previously reported by CABS in 2019 for the same offense. The man had also been accused of exposing himself towards conservationists and reckless driving in a past incident. Due to a legal technicality, his previous case was dismissed.

CABS has also raised concerns about the use of trapping sites that were previously registered under a government-supervised “finch research project.” CABS Press Officer Axel Hirschfeld described the project as controversial, arguing that it has been misused to justify continued trapping.

The organization has confirmed that its teams will remain in Malta and Gozo until May.

Triq Girolamo Cassar In Valletta With Over 100 Fines In 2024’s First 3 Months

In a parliamentary session, PN MP Jerome Caruana Cilia asked Minister for Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works, Chris Bonnett, to reveal the ten roads in Malta with the most fines issued during the first three months of 2024.

Triq Girolamo Cassar in Valletta racked the highest amount at 102 contraventions, followed by Paola’s Telgħa ta’ Ras Ħanżir at 100.

The road with the lowest amount (in this group) was Triq il-Buqana in Rabat, with 43 contraventions.

It was followed by Triq Elija Żammit in St Julian’s at 46 contraventions.

In total, 703 fines were issued in the first quarter of 2024.

More People Threatening & Insulting Police In 2024

According to information tabled in parliament by Minister Byron Camilleri, there were 58 cases of insulting and threatening of police officers in 2024, up from 41 in the previous year.

The information, tabled in response to a question by PN MP Graziella Attard Previ, revealed there were 19 cases of resistance in 2024, just one less than the previous year.

Meanwhile, there were 9 cases of vilification in 2024, down from 14 cases in 2023. When it comes to outright violence against officials, there were 28 cases in 2024, down from 36 in 2023.

As for the year 2025, for which information available covers the period until March 2024, there were 5 cases of insults and threats directed at officers. There were also single cases of resistance and violence.

It was announced earlier this year that harsher penalties for attacks on public officials will be in effect, with insults and threats seeing a minimum fine raised from €800 to €1,200.

A 1 km shared mobility space has been introduced, creating a safer, more sustainable route for pedestrians and cyclists.

New footpath lighting enhances nighttime safety, improving visibility and making the space more secure.

Flood mitigation efforts include a temporary French drain system, with a new underground reservoir currently in development. This will collect rainwater to support irrigation and prevent flooding.

These upgrades contribute to a safer, more sustainable, and more resilient Żabbar Road.
