1509 vehicles per 1,000 license holders in 2020

The National Statistics Office showed that there were 1509 registered vehicles for every 1000 driving license holders in 2020. The Regional Statistics 2021 also showed that there were 402,427 licensed vehicles in 2020, with passenger cars accounting for 76.6% of the total licensed vehicles.

An increase of 1.0% over 2019 racked up the total driving license holders to 265,974, with 155,774 male and 110,200 female license holders. Traffic accidents however decreased by 24.5% over 2019. The number of traffic casualties amounted to 1153 in 2020, down by 28.5% over 2019. Of these, 769 were drivers of whom 578 suffered slight injuries, 140 suffered grievous injuries and 10 proved fatal.

Joseph Muscat given €120,000 termination bonus following resignation

Following his resignation, Ex-Prime Minister Joseph Muscat received around €120,000 as a termination bonus, as reported by The Shift News. This amounts to the equivalent of two years of a prime minister’s salary. Walking away with €120,128.40 in a one time offer, Muscat also continued to receive his regular parliamentary honoraria up until October 202 when he resigned from parliament.

Covering his time as both Opposition leader and Prime Minister (October 2008 – January 2020), the payment was granted as part of the Terminal and Transitional Benefit scheme introduced by the Nationalist government in 2004. Tabled by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi in 2008, all prime ministers, ministers, parliamentary secretaries and opposition leaders are entitled to this benefit upon termination.

Minister Ian Borg one of 16000 spectators in Italy VS Turkey match

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Ian Borg posted to social media stating how he decided to take a small holiday by attending the 2020 opening Italy vs Turkey match. The match allowed 16,000 spectators to watch as Italy beat their opponents 3-0. He stated that he was relieved to be back in the stadium since COVID-19 struck. It is worth noting that there is nothing wrong with a Minister having some enjoyable time off on holiday.

Some comments, however, pointed out that events such as these are far from happening in Malta any time soon. It was only yesterday that Health Minister Chris Fearne allowed seated events to happen, albeit starting at just 100 fully-vaccinated people by 5th July. Some highlighted how Malta has a far better COVID-19 case percentage than Rome, despite the fact that Malta’s grounds are still closed off, calling it ironic.

Maltese entrepreneur lands €87,500 following UK TV show deal

Maltese entrepreneur and haircare brand inventor Yanika Cordina managed to land a business deal following her pitch on hit UK TV show ‘Dragon’s Den’. Dragon’s Den is a renowned UK TV programme airing on BBC One in which entrepreneurs present business ideas to five wealth investors (the titular ‘dragons’). Cordina left the show with €87,500 (£75,000) after securing the money from Sara Davies in exchange for equity in her firm.

Contestants who receive the capital offer the dragons a stake in their company in return. Cordina is a 31-year-old from Fgura who pitched her Cordina Hair Business and heatless hair curler products; the Flower Curl and; Wave Bun to the dragons. Cordina told Times of Malta that Davies’ expertise ‘would highly benefit the business and would help to grow the company exponentially.’
