Trump Appears Behind Bulletproof Glass Since Shooting

Former US President Donald Trump held his first outdoor rally since being injured in a shooting at an event in Pennsylvania last month. Appearing behind bulletproof glass in Asheboro, North Carolina, Trump addressed supporters alongside Republican figures, including JD Vance and gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson. Trump centred his speech on national security, repeating familiar claims about NATO allies failing to meet financial commitments, while attacking his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris, calling her “Comrade Kamala.”

He asserted, without evidence, that Russia’s war in Ukraine would not have occurred under his presidency, citing support from Hungarian leader Viktor Orbán. Trump also criticised the 2022 US withdrawal from Afghanistan, vowing to hold military leaders accountable.

Despite efforts to keep him focused on policy, Trump often strayed into personal grievances, reviving false claims of election fraud and responding to Barack Obama’s critical comments from the Democratic National Convention. The rally was part of Trump’s attempt to counter-programme the convention, which has featured prominent Democratic politicians and celebrity appearances.

Second Turtle Nest of 2024 Fully Hatched

Second Turtle Nest of 2024 Fully Hatched
Aug 23 2024 Share

The second turtle nest of 2024, initially discovered on July 1 at Għajn Tuffieħa, has fully hatched after three days of activity. Due to its proximity to the sea and risk of being washed away, the nest was carefully translocated to Golden Bay. Today, the nest was excavated by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA), Nature Trust Malta (NTM), and a qualified veterinarian to assess its condition.

Of the 74 eggs, 60 successfully hatched, marking Malta’s first successful hatching of a translocated nest. An additional 25 eggs were found still in the nest. With six more nests expected to hatch in the coming weeks, this season is shaping up to be record-breaking.

The ERA urges the public to exercise extreme caution near nesting sites. If present during a hatching, individuals are reminded to avoid using lights, flashes, or loud noises. The ERA also expressed gratitude to the public and volunteers for their support, noting that they continue to work alongside NTM to conduct animal rescues and rehabilitation across the Maltese Islands.
