May 26th is World Redhead Day – a vibrant celebration of people with naturally red hair.

With redheads reportedly making up less than 2% of the global population, the festival was started in 2005 unintentionally by Dutch painter Bart Rouwenhorst in a small Dutch city.

Inspired by painters who created portraits of redheaded women, he decided to hold an exhibition of 15 new paintings of redheads.

Finding it an issue to find redheads – due to their rarity – he release an advertisement, leading to a response by 150 volunteers.

This has carried on throughout history as the rarity of the hair colour is celebrated in various parts of the world.

Do you know any redheads?
