Young player rejects holiday offer from Barcelona

19 year-old Spanish midfielder Pedri has reportedly rejected Barcelona’s offer of a 2-week holiday. Pedri has had an eventful breakout year playing an enormous 73 games this season.

He played as a regular for Barcelona last season, which earned him a spot in Spain’s Euro 2020 squad. At the Euros he won best young player of the tournament, impressing everyone with his mixture of elegance and toughness in the Spanish midfield. After the Euros, the young player was also selected for Spain’s Olympic squad for Tokyo 2020.

Many memes surfaced online about how Pedri was still regularly playing this deep into the season. The player played his last match of the 2020-2021 season last Saturday losing 2-1 to Brazil in the Olympics final. The silver medallist will now join his Barcelona teammates in training for their first game of the 2021-2022 season this Sunday, which means that Pedri’s summer break will only be around 2 days.

Heatwaves have scorched the Maltese environmental landscape

Zebbug local councillor Steve Zammit Lupi took to Facebook to mourn the loss of acres of environmental land due to the scorching heat waves ravaging the Maltese islands. As other countries touching the Mediterranean also experience blazing fires, forcing hundreds to evacuate their homes, Malta has not been spared of the damaging flames and fumes.

Zammit Lupi pointed out how around 25 tumoli of land were burned in Wied Qirda, along with another 10 tumoli in Girgenti Valley. Mature locust and poplar trees were scorched, with the drought currently underway not helping the situation in any way. Zammit Lupi asks what political measures and acts exist to prevent such incidents and mitigate them when they eventually do happen. He ends his powerful post by stating that if we are not careful, the Maltese environmental landscape can be permanently burned, and what is burned down cannot be reacquired.

Breaking: Lionel Messi officially joins Paris Saint-Germain

Following his departure from Barcelona, football star Lionel Messi has signed a two-year deal with Paris Saint-Germain. The deal is worth some £25m per year after tax, with the player having the option to extend the deal for a third year and receiving a £25m signing-on fee. Barcelona was unable to complete a deal signing which would have seen Messi re-join his now former team for another five years.

Messi would have continued to extend his 21 year stay at Barcelona, but could not due to what the club deemed ‘financial and structural obstacles.’ Messi claimed he did everything he could to remain at the club, which includes agreeing to a 50% wage cut. PSG’s potential to compete for major trophies are seen as a key factor in the player’s decision to move to France.

51 COVID-19 cases registered with 70 recoveries

Malta has registered 51 new cases of COVID-19 in the past 24 hours from 3,093 swab tests, while 70 patients have recovered. No deaths were registered in the past 24 hours. This information was announced by the official Facebook page of Malta’s Ministry for Health.

As of Monday 9th August 2021, 777,181 vaccine doses were administered of which 405,073 were 1st doses. 398,128 people are currently fully vaccinated.

To date, Malta has registered 34,953 COVID-19 cases in total, of which: 33,270 have recovered, 428 died and 859 are still active.

Mater Dei Hospital is currently treating a total of 42 COVID-19 positive patients, three of whom are in the ITU. The average age of yesterday’s cases was 42.
