Marine biologist Alan Deidun shared footage of a ‘graceful juvenile flying fish’ filmed in Maltese waters.
The footage was sent to Deidun by Reuben Chirchop St. John, and the marine biologist took to opportunity to explain that there are at least 4 different species of flying fish within the Mediterranean.
One of them, Cheilopogon heterurus, has been given the Maltese name of rundinell (local name for ‘swift’, a bird species) – quite appropriate for a fish that literally hovers out of the water with wing-like fins.
Have you ever spotted these marvellous creatures?
