For anyone who’s ever been on one, a long haul flight with its economy class seats is not exactly the best experience. The journey is made more tedious by the fact that the seats aren’t designed for maximum comfort, and given the long hours, it can really take a toll.
But now, it seems as though Air New Zealand has found a solution to combat this annoying problem – bunkbeds!
The airline is currently testing its ‘Skynest’ concept, which includes six full length sleeping pods. According to CNN, the passengers will be able to lay down and stretch on actual beds.
The sleeping pods will be included in the new Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which are scheduled to enter service in 2024. They will be available on excessively long 17-hour flights.
According to the report, passengers can book a four-hour slot in a bunk bed, with the snapshots of the concept uploaded to the airline’s twitter showing just what people are in for. With full-size pillows, bedding, ear plugs, reading lights and a ventilation outlet, this will definitely offer up a new flight experience.
“A typical sleep cycle is around 90 minutes, so a four-hour session allows customers to wind down, fall asleep, and wake up,” a spokesperson said. Five economy seats will be removed to make way for six Skynest sleep pods, with the bedding changed after every session for hygiene.
