Texas State University will be launching a course next year based completely on pop-singer Harry Styles.
The course is promising a deeper exploration into the singer’s work by associate professor of digital history at Texas State Louie Dean Valencia, a massive fan of Styles himself.
The course was announced last week that he will be teaching an Honours College course titled ‘Harry Styles and the Cult of Celebrity: Identity, the Internet and European Pop Culture’ in Spring 2023.
The flier released outlines a broader focus on Styles and how he factors into the ‘cultural and political development of the modern celebrity as related to questions of gender and sexuality, race, class, nation and globalism, media, fashion, fan culture, internet culture and consumerism.’
The professor spoke with The SYSCA Daily about proposing the course, highlighting the impact of the Styles fandom and One Direction. The course aims to show how Styles impacted the world through his activism, philosophy and art.
Students will also be tasked with producing a podcast series about the topic as they examine Style’s music as well as his input into the movie industry.
