World’s Oldest Gorilla Fat Celebrates 67th Birthday

World’s Oldest Gorilla Fat Celebrates 67th Birthday

Fatou, believed to be the oldest gorilla in the world at 67 years old, is a celebrated resident of the Berlin Zoo, the most visited zoo in Europe.

Born in 1957, Fatou arrived at the zoo at the age of 2 and later became a mother, grandmother, and even a great-great-great-grandmother to multiple descendants.

Despite her extensive family, Fatou prefers solitude and lives in her own enclosure, occasionally interacting with her neighbors.

She became the Berlin Zoo’s oldest resident earlier this year after the death of Ingo the flamingo, who lived to be at least 75 years old. In 2019, Fatou became the oldest living gorilla following the passing of Trudy from Little Rock Zoo in Arkansas, and in 2020, she surpassed Trudy’s age to become the oldest gorilla ever recorded.

Fatou’s birthday, celebrated annually with a special feast, features a menu of fruits, vegetables, and edible flowers, tailored to her dietary needs due to her lack of teeth. Gorillas, known as “gardeners” in their natural habitat, primarily consume a vegetarian diet but can enjoy fruit on special occasions while limiting sugar intake.

On her special day, the Berlin Zoo invites visitors to join in the celebration by incorporating fruits into their meals in honor of Fatou’s birthday.

In a tragic incident near Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, five people have been killed and several others, including a baby, are critically injured after a stabbing spree at a shopping center. The attacker, acting alone, was confronted and shot dead by a female police officer.

Authorities confirmed that there is no longer a threat to the public, although the suspect’s identity and motive remain unknown. The attack prompted the evacuation of hundreds of people from the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center.

Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke of the New South Wales Police Force provided details, explaining that the attacker initially entered the center, left, and then returned later in the afternoon, engaging with multiple individuals before being confronted by the police officer on the fifth level.

The wounded, including a child, were transported to hospitals for treatment.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos and fear, with one individual recounting hiding and hearing gunshots, fearing for their life. Another witness, an ABC sound engineer, described seeking refuge in a locked store during the incident.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed condolences for the victims and praised the bravery of first responders and civilians who intervened during the crisis. The incident, described as unprecedented by Mr. Cooke, has prompted a critical incident response, and further updates are expected as the situation unfolds.

Minimum Age To Use WhatsApp In Europe Lowered To 13

Minimum Age To Use WhatsApp In Europe Lowered To 13
Apr 13 2024 Share

Meta has recently lowered the minimum age requirement for WhatsApp in Europe from 16 to 13, aligning with the age restriction already announced in the United Kingdom earlier this year.

This change, which took effect in the European Union on Thursday, has sparked criticism from children’s rights advocates who argue that it exposes young people to significant online risks.

Campaign groups, including Smartphone Free Childhood in the UK, have called on WhatsApp to reverse this decision, emphasizing concerns over children’s safety and well-being. Daisy Greenwell, co-founder of Smartphone Free Childhood, criticized WhatsApp for prioritizing shareholder profits over children’s safety.

UK lawmaker Vicky Ford also expressed concern, calling the decision irresponsible and highlighting the lack of consultation with parents prior to lowering the age limit.

In response, a WhatsApp spokesperson emphasized the platform’s features that allow users to control their interactions and block unknown contacts for added safety.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has faced widespread criticism for its approach to age restrictions and online safety.

Last year, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, was accused of obstructing efforts to improve teen well-being on Facebook and Instagram, showing ongoing concerns about the impact of social media on young users.

The European Commission, the EU’s executive body, has not yet commented on this recent change. This controversy reflects broader debates over social media regulation and the responsibilities of tech companies in protecting young users from online harms.
