Triathlete Fabio Wonders What Neil Agius ‘Saw’ During His Swim

Sep 24 2024 Share

Fabio Spiteri, an ultra-endurance athlete, recently shared his thoughts on Neil Agius’s record-breaking swim in a social media post, highlighting the intense mental challenges faced during such extreme feats.

Spiteri, expressing admiration, stated, “I am curious what Neil Agius’s hallucinations consisted of,” referencing the mental strain that typically emerges after prolonged hours of physical effort. He humorously speculated, “Mermaids? Sea monsters? Atlantic City? Colourful submarines?” before recounting his own experience during ultra-endurance events, where he hallucinated “shining red eyes between plants and trees in the middle of the night.” Spiteri’s post captures the surreal experiences athletes face when pushing their limits, where exhaustion leads to vivid hallucinations.

His remarks, “This is ULTRA!!! Hats off!” underscore the awe and respect he has for Agius’s accomplishment, recognising the intense mental fortitude required to complete such a daunting challenge.
