Works to clear up Għadira road after heavy winds take over Malta on Friday

On Friday, the Maltese islands experienced an extended period of heavy winds of Gale Force 7, with Facebook page ‘It-Temp Madwarna’ reporting that a gust of wind in Selmun reached 92km per hour, or Gale Force 10.

Parliamentary Secretary for Consumer Protection and Public Cleansing Deo Debattista also reported works on Għadira’s roads after being covered with sand, making it dangerous for drivers passing through the area.

While it was reported that the heavy winds would be slowly decreasing, the issued warning still applies for Saturday, as the weather partially cloudy on Saturday morning with forecasted highs of 17°C and lows of 12°C.

British actress Helen McCrory, known for her role as Aunt Polly in Peaky Blinders, Narcissa Malfoy in Harry Potter, and her appearance in Skyfall has died suddenly at the age of 52. Her husband Damian Lewis confirmed her passing in a heartbreaking statement saying ‘Im heartbroken to announce that after a heroic battle with cancer, the beautiful and mighty woman that is Helen McCrory has died peacefully at home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family.’

Helen had been married to Damian since 2007 and had two children – a daughter named Manon, 14, and a son, Gulliver, 13. She was also awarded an OBE in 2017 for her services to drama. Her passing shocked entire fandoms as fans of her work world-wide mourn her passing.

Gozo Channel operating through South Quay due to strong winds

Malta is currently experiencing very strong winds which are affecting the normal Gozo Channel operations. Gozo Channel Operations Limited stated on Facebook that ‘due to strong winds and currents, Gozo Channel operations are operating through the South Quay in Cirkewwa.’

Such strong winds normally affect travel around the island, and with winds reportedly reaching up to 40 km/h, it is expected for the Gozo Channel to alter its normal operating service. Access between Malta and Gozo is already restricted due to COVID-19 restrictions, allowing only those who have work responsibilities or residences on the island to travel.

Malta’s contact tracing app to work in 16 European countries

Superintendent for Public Health Charmaine Gauci has announced that Malta’s COVID-19 contact tracing app will be operable in 16 European countries. The 16 countries agreed to this operation in order to make travelling much safer during the COVID-19 pandemic. The tracing app works via bluetooth in the background of one’s mobile phone. Should a person test positive for COVID-19, they can submit a code into the app which will alert people who had come into contact through the same app.

The 16 countries who agreed to the use of this technology are Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Poland and Spain. The use of the app is completely up to the individual to decide, and all details are confidential. Just over 20% of the public have downloaded the app in Malta alone.
