A machine operator who lost his finger in a factory incident will be compensated €81,000 after the Court of Malta held the company responsible for 85 per cent of the incident which occurred on April 16 in 2015.

The worker reportedly had his hand caught in the factory apparatus and had to remove his finger via operation as a result. The worker and his wife opened a court case against the company in Malta’s civil court, where the Court held the company responsible for the incident. The victim had been working on the company for 16 years, highlighting the issue with ongoing pressure in his place of work due to the high demand of doors which had to be produced. He went on to mention that a co-worker of his lost his life in the same place only seven weeks after the initial incident.

With regards to the incident, the Court ruled that the company faulted by putting the safety responsibility on the machine operators, with judge Lawrence Mintoff stating that the company should have provided machinery equipped with the best safety features.

When working out compensation, judge Mintoff stated that the victim was 39 years old when the incident took place, leaving the individual with a permanent disability of 28 per cent.
