From a site once earmarked for development, Pembroke residents will soon enjoy a new garden at the heart of their community, thanks to ongoing works by Project Green.
The transformation of the area was highlighted during a visit by Minister for the Environment Miriam Dalli, Project Green CEO Joseph Cuschieri, Pembroke Mayor Kaylon Zammit, and the Project Green team.
The garden, spanning nearly 9,000 square meters, is being created with permeable materials to allow rainwater filtration and promote sustainable water management. Accessibility for all visitors is also a key feature of the project.
Minister Dalli described the initiative as transformative, stating, “Instead of building apartments, we are creating a vibrant green space accessible to everyone.
This reflects the Government’s commitment to regenerating and creating open spaces near residents’ homes.” The William Harding Garden is among several projects set for completion this year.
The project converts a previously concreted area into a biodiverse green space offering recreational opportunities.
It includes the restoration of a 120-meter traditional rubble wall and the revitalisation of an underground reservoir to encourage sustainable water use. Excavation works removed 1,800 cubic meters of concrete and debris, making way for permeable surfaces and footpaths.
In September, Project Green held a consultation session with residents to gather feedback. This input led to the inclusion of additional trees and shrubs in the final design to promote community engagement.
Project Manager Joseph Borda explained, “Once we removed the concrete, we laid soil to prepare for planting. This garden is part of a series of green initiatives across Malta and Gozo.”
Pembroke Mayor Kaylon Zammit expressed his satisfaction with the project, calling the garden a “green lung” for the locality. He emphasised that such collaborations benefit residents and enhance the community.
