Yesterday, on World Mental Health Day, Dr Lydia Abela, the wife of the Prime Minister, hosted an event aimed at raising awareness for mental health. The gathering brought together Members of Parliament from both sides of the House, along with individuals from various walks of life, to highlight the importance of unity in tackling mental health issues. Dr Abela delivered a clear message that, when it comes to mental health, there are no political colours or divisions; these challenges must be addressed collectively, as one team.

During the event, Dr Abela announced a significant initiative in collaboration with President Emeritus Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca to enhance the services of psychotherapists in schools. This initiative aims to provide better support to young people facing mental health challenges, emphasising the need to address such issues from an early age.

Pavement and Paving Infrastructure Project to Enhance the Beauty and Accessibility of Mdina

The Department of Public Works will soon commence significant infrastructural upgrades in Mdina, a city rich in national heritage and a popular destination for both locals and tourists. The works will focus on improving several pavements and paving in the city’s center and surrounding areas.

During a site visit, Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia, accompanied by Mdina Mayor Peter dei Conti Sant Manduca, emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing the city’s infrastructure.

Farrugia highlighted the dual focus on aesthetics and accessibility, stating, “These works will benefit both the thousands of Maltese who visit and the tourists who come to enjoy the beauty of this locality.”

The project stems from an agreement made earlier this year between the Government and 54 Local Councils, aimed at improving infrastructure across Malta. Farrugia reiterated that Mdina is receiving the attention it deserves as a site of national importance.

Mayor Sant Manduca expressed gratitude to the government for its efforts in Mdina, stressing that the work will be carried out with full respect for the city’s heritage while ensuring that it is preserved to the highest standards.

Turkish Airlines Pilot Dies During Flight

A Turkish Airlines pilot has tragically passed away mid-flight, after collapsing during the journey from Seattle to Istanbul.

The airline confirmed that the tragic incident prompted an emergency landing in New York.

Pilot İlçehin Pehlivan, 59, lost consciousness shortly after Turkish Airlines Flight 204 departed from Seattle on Tuesday night, according to a statement by airline spokesperson Yahya Üstün.

Despite medical efforts to revive him, the captain could not be saved. The co-pilot opted for an emergency landing, but unfortunately, the captain passed away before the plane could touch down, Üstün added.

According to data from FlightAware, the Airbus A350 made an emergency landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport shortly before 6 a.m. Arrangements were then made for passengers to continue to their final destination from New York, the airline’s spokesperson confirmed.

Pilot İlçehin Pehlivan had been with Turkish Airlines since 2007, and a routine health check in March revealed no issues that would have prevented him from flying, spokesperson Yahya Üstün stated.

“As Turkish Airlines, we deeply mourn the loss of our captain and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, and loved ones,” Üstün added.
