Rangers on a night patrol at Miġra l-Ferħa in Rabat encountered an ongoing wildfire in the Natura 2000 site at around 1:30 AM. The fire, likely caused by improperly disposed of hot charcoal from a bonfire or BBQ, was rapidly spreading due to strong winds. Rangers immediately called the Civil Protection Department to the scene, where they worked to prevent the fire from spreading further.
The wildfire affected a large area, and unfortunately, some reptiles were found dead in the aftermath. This incident highlights the dangers of lighting fires directly on the ground, especially on windy nights. The Rangers emphasized the importance of proper fire safety, reminding the public to avoid kindling fires in such conditions.
Authorities expressed their gratitude to the Civil Protection team for their prompt response, which was instrumental in containing the fire before it could cause even more damage. This serves as a reminder of the potential risks posed by negligence in natural areas and the importance of fire safety precautions.
