Today, October 16th 2022, marks the 5 year anniversary from the brutal assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
Daphne was an active journalist, columnist and writer for over 30 years in Malta, having been pivotal in uncovering several instances of corruption in the local scene.
The mother of three sons with her husband Peter – Matthew, Andrew and Paul – Daphne was more than just an editor and columnist. A writer with a passion for food and writing about it, especially in the magazine ‘Taste & Flair’ which she ran, Caruana Galizia was a notable figure on the islands given her investigative reporting on governmental corruption, money laundering and organised crime.
All throughout her career she was subject to multiple instances of intimidation and threats, with her son Matthew saying that threatening calls and letters were almost a daily occurrence.
Her house was also set on fire twice, once when the family was sleeping inside, and many of her pets were targeted or outright murdered. However, Daphne never gave up her mission to report on what she saw to be corrupt.
She also never applied for any awards, never nominated herself or asked anyone to nominate her. Despite this, she won many posthumous awards and honours following her assassination. The assassination was made known internationally, with many eyes watching as the trials of those involved continue to this very day.
