An Exciting Milestone for the University of Malta Rowing Club

2023 European Rowing Coastal & Beach Sprint Championships

The 2023 European Rowing Coastal & Beach Sprint Championships took place between September 1st and 3rd in the picturesque coastal town of La Seyne-Sur-Mer, France. This event marked an exciting milestone for the University of Malta Rowing Club as they made their debut in the challenging world of coastal rowing.

Two eager participants, Michael Azzopardi and Martina Zammit, represented the University of Malta Rowing Club in the endurance coastal race category. For them, this competition was not just about medals and accolades; it was a journey into uncharted waters, both literally and figuratively.

The coastal rowing endurance race, a grueling 4-6km event, required the participants to navigate between strategically placed buoys, culminating in an exhilarating sprint on the sandy shores. With the wind whipping against them and the seas proving to be rougher than anticipated, these races pushed the limits of physical prowess and navigation skills, challenging even the most seasoned rowers.

What made this event even more impressive was the sheer number of participants, with approximately 500 rowers from various categories and backgrounds converging to test their mettle on the coastal course. The competition was fierce, and each race was a thrilling spectacle of endurance, technique, and determination.

For Michael Azzopardi and Martina Zammit, this event was a true test of their abilities and marked the beginning of a promising coastal rowing journey. Representing their university on an international stage was an honor, and they showcased commendable dedication throughout the competition.

ALS Malta: A Foundation That Makes a Difference

ALS Malta: A Foundation That Makes a Difference

ALS Malta is a foundation that aims to improve the quality of life of people living with ALS and other neurological conditions in Malta and Gozo. The foundation not only helps 43 patients that are residents in DAR Bjorn, a state-of-the-art facility that provides round-the-clock care and support, but also 400 patients who are living in their homes.

ALS Malta provides free counselling, free medical equipment, free physiotherapy, free speech therapy, and free occupational therapy to these patients and their families. The foundation also raises awareness and funds for research on ALS and other neurological diseases.

To illustrate the impact that ALS Malta has on the lives of its beneficiaries, here are some examples of the stories of the people that the foundation has helped:

Lennon John is a unique child with a rare disorder that affects the nervous system and causes developmental delays, speech problems, and movement difficulties. His parents, Nicholas and Pamela, describe him as a happy and loving boy who enjoys music and playing with his siblings. Pamela and Nicholas are not alone in this challenge, but they have ALS Malta helping them every step of the way.

Jasmine is a two-year-old girl has limited mobility and needs constant care and attention. Her parents, reached out to ALS Malta for help and the foundation provided them with a monkey stand, a device that helps Jasmine to stand upright and do physiotherapy exercises. Jasmine can now improve her posture, balance, and muscle strength. She can also interact more with her surroundings and enjoy playing with her toys.

Isaac is an 11-year-old boy was diagnosed with Ataxia, a disorder that causes loss of muscle control in their arms and legs.  Isaac has difficulty walking, standing, and using his arms. He needs a trolley/stand to move around. Isaac’s parents contacted ALS Malta for assistance and the foundation provided them with a stand (trolley), a device that allows Isaac to play with his friends. Isaac can now join his classmates in their activities and have fun with them.

These are just some of the many stories of hope and courage that ALS Malta has made possible through its work. The foundation relies on donations from generous individuals and organisations to continue its mission of helping people with ALS and other neurological conditions.

On the 24th of September, there will be a fundraising TV marathon on all major TV station from noon to midnight.
