What you need to know about Italy’s first female prime minister

Giorgia Meloni is the leader of far-right Brothers of Italy party.

Following final vote count, a coalition will form between:

Matteo Salvini’s League
Silvio Berlusconi’s Forza Italia
Meloni’s Brothers of Italy

Meloni has called for a naval blockade of Africa’s Mediterranean cost to stop migrants from arriving. This comes despite Pope Francis’ warnings to people not to vote for parties ‘raising walls against our brothers and sisters.’

In her manifesto, she describes ideal immigrants as coming from countries wherein ‘they integrate better’. She had claimed she strongly supports sending weapons to Ukraine and backing the Western sanctions against Russia.

Her rise to power has worried many members of the LGBTQ community, especially gay parents due to her stating she opposes adoption and surrogacy.

Meloni has also said she doesn’t want to repeal laws that permit abortions, but described the success of right wing politicians in Piemonte to fund anti-abortion groups as a ‘courageous choice.’

During a speech to Spain’s far right Vox party earlier this year, Meloni was quoted in saying: “Yes to the natural family, no to the LGBT lobby, yes to sexual identity, no to gender ideology.”

When it comes to energy and climate, Meloni’s coalition ranked last in a list of green policies but scored highly in their levels of environmental denial.

Study suggests pumping weights could extend your lifespan

Study suggests pumping weights could extend your lifespan

Do you want to live forever? Okay, maybe not exactly forever – but if you want to pack in some extra years into your life you might want to use that gym subscription you don’t utilise.

According to a new study, it was found that lifting and pumping weights could help extend one’s life.

US researchers have found that activities which strengthen the muscles – most notably weightlifting – should be part of weekly exercises along aerobic exercise like swimming and running.

But there’s good news for people who don’t want to head to a gym as anything form of weight lifting can work.

This means lifting heavy shopping bags, digging in the garden and even pilates could count as this weight lifting exercise. Researchers found that people who underwent 150 minutes of weekly moderate exercise lived longer than those who didn’t.

These people, surveyed from 150,000 people in their 60s and 70s, were found to have a 47% lower risk of dying from any cause, apart from cancer, over the next nine years.

Weightlifting lowered the risk by around 9 to 22%, whereas aerobic exercise lowered it by 24 to 34%.

The Malta National Team beat Israel 2-1 yesterday evening in a sensational game at the National Stadium. With two late goals through Alex Satariano and Ferdinando Apap, the victory saw another massive achievement for the local players.

The match and victory were dedicated to head coach Devis Mangia, assistant coach Davide Mazzotta told reporters. This however comes after the head coach was suspended from his duties due to allegations of sexual harassment and assault on one of the players.

According to TVM News, the case has been referred to the police who are launching an investigation, which involves a recording on the harassment by Mangia.

In response, the Malta Football Association (MFA) said that Mangia was suspended from his duties due to what it deemed a policy breach.

However, the MFA did not comment on the issue further, saying that it awaits official police findings. Mangia had been head coach for three years, with a contract that expires next year. The national team saw various improvements and successes under Mangia’s leadership.
