This afternoon, firefighters from Stations 1 and 4 successfully carried out a delicate rescue operation after a young child fell into a well.

The toddler’s father, who had entered the confined space in an attempt to help, was also safely brought back to the surface.

The incident occurred around three storeys below ground level, requiring the use of specialist rope access techniques to extract both individuals safely and efficiently.

The operation demanded precision, coordination, and calm under pressure, and was executed with great professionalism by all those involved.

The Civil Protection Department of Malta has expressed its sincere gratitude to the Emergency Department at Mater Dei Hospital and to the Malta Police Force for their vital support and collaboration throughout the incident.

Thanks to the swift response and effective teamwork of all emergency services, both the child and the father were rescued without serious injury.

22% Of Maltese Are Smokers

22% Of Maltese Are Smokers

New data released by the European Parliament shows that 22% of people in Malta are smokers.

Raising awareness on World No Tobacco Day, the European Parliament emphasised how over 700,000 deaths every year are caused by tobacco.

Meanwhile, 24% of adults smoke, with nearly 30% of 15 to 24 year olds also taking up smoking. Most smokers begin before they turn 18.

‘Would you let the last 14 years of your life go up in smoke’, the EP asked. ‘That’s the average cost for half of all smokers – and it’s entirely preventable.’

It should be noted that this data doesn’t include use of other tobacco products such as electronic cigarettes and snuff.

Are you a smoker?
