Of the names given to babies born in 2021, the most popular were Matteo, Luca and Noah for boys along with Emma, Mia and Ella for girls. Identity Malta highlighted that over the past year, 2,123 boys and 2,040 girls were born, with one baby registered as gender-neutral.
Identity Malta Senior Manager Vincent Sladden explained that the majority of registrations took place in the agency’s Mater Dei branch. He also remarked that 2021’s figures reflect the amendments that recently came into place, such as names with Maltese characters such as Ġuże, Ġanni, Eliża & Luċija, which were four of the most popular Maltese names.
Other popular names registered in 2021 were Adam and Jake for boys & Valentina and Emily for girls.
During 2021, Malta also registered 3,699 deaths, of which 1,845 were men and 1,854 were women, with Sladden highlighting that the number may be much higher as not all deaths may be registered as it is not a legal obligation.
