Debunking Myths For Bat Appreciation Day!

Debunking Myths For Bat Appreciation Day!
Apr 17 2024 Share

Did you know that the 17th of April is International Bat Appreciation Day? In anticipation, Wildlife Rescue Team Malta shared a number of posts with factual information and debunking myths about these fantastic creatures.

In one post targeting various myths surrounding the creatures, the wildlife rescue team explained how the common idea of bats being dirty and blood-sucking nightmare creatures is totally inaccurate.

‘There are 3 species of ‘vampire’ bats found in Latin America, and they usually target cattle. All other species of bats worldwide feed on insects, fruit or nectar. The ones we find in Malta are insectivores, meaning they have no interest in your blood.’

Meanwhile, not all bats are known to carry diseases like rabies, with the disease not having been documented in Malta.

‘Having said that, they are mammals just like us, and it is never recommended to handle bare-handed, both for your and their safety.’

In another post, the team explained that many calls received during the year concern people finding baby bats – which in actuality are usually juveniles or adults due to Maltese bat sizes being quite small

In fact, if the bat is the size of a 10c coin, it’s a baby. If it’s the size of your little finger, it’s a juvenile or adult!

‘When we receive calls for pups, we always first try to re-unite with the mum. When this does not happen, the pups would need round the clock care to survive.’

According to the Dubai Meteorological Office, over 6.26 inches of rain fell between 10 p.m. local time Monday and 10 p.m. local time Tuesday, significantly surpassing Dubai’s annual average rainfall of 3.12 inches as reported by the World Meteorological Organization.

The extraordinary weather conditions led to disruptions at Dubai International Airport, which temporarily redirected inbound flights. However, departures remained unaffected. In response to the situation, all Dubai government entities and private schools transitioned to remote work on Tuesday.

Dubai typically receives the majority of its annual rainfall—more than 92%—between November and March, with April historically being very dry, averaging just 0.13 inches of rain.

Scientists attribute such extreme rainfall events to human-amplified climate change, as highlighted in the U.S. government’s Fifth National Climate Assessment. These events not only signify a shift in weather patterns but also pose challenges to existing infrastructure, resulting in increased instances of flash flooding.

PN Highlight Need For New Vessel For Gozo-Malta Travel

PN Highlight Need For New Vessel For Gozo-Malta Travel
Apr 16 2024 Share

In response to the pressing demand for increased ferry services between Malta and Gozo, Nationalist MP Alex Borg, Shadow Minister for Gozo, emphasized the urgent need for an additional Gozo Channel ferry.

Borg reiterated the Nationalist Party’s longstanding advocacy for providing Gozitans and Maltese citizens with another high-quality vessel, citing examples such as the MV Malita, MV Ta’ Pinu, and MV Gaudos.

He pointed out that the investment made by the Nationalist government 22 years ago continues to benefit the islands today.

Borg criticized the current Labour government for failing to invest in a fourth ferry over the past 11 years, instead opting to waste public funds on chartering third-class vessels that are neither accessible nor operational when needed.

This shortage results in significant delays for passengers traveling between the two islands, particularly during weekends and festivals, prolonging journeys unnecessarily.

Borg urged the government to cease squandering taxpayer money and redirect it towards essential investments, emphasizing the necessity of acquiring another ferry that adequately serves the needs of Gozo.
