In the process, the young athlete broke a commonwealth youth weightlifting record, finishing with 84kg on the snatch and 104kg on the clean and jerks.
As a result, Thornton surpassed previous record holder Sakuma Adka from India, who held the record at 180kg. If that wasn’t enough, Tenishia also broke four national records in four different age groups in the 59kg.
Finishing 33rd place overall from 52 global athletes, Thornton was also the youngest athlete taking part in the competition.
