As part of its efforts to meet Malta’s climate change goals, the government has stated that it will have 90% of purchased goods and services conform to the green procurement criteria by 2027. Green procurement is a sustainable practice which adopts ecologically responsible decisions to meet needs for goods, utilities, services and materials.
In a recent Facebook post, Environment Minister Aaron Farrugia stated that the government will lead by example, going on to reveal the plan of action with regards to the Green Public Procurement. Farrugia went on to highlight that, amongst other measures, this will lead to a complete switch to electric vehicles in the civil sector, with the plan also to be procured by the ministers, agencies and government agencies.
The government will also be on the forefront of choosing “environmental friendly” products and services and increase such products’ accessibility. The government will also facilitate an environmental transition into a circular economy, rather than the linear economy the country has been practicing in the past years.
