WATCH: Smoke over Ramla Bay and huge fire in Nadur fields during Mnarja

Footage surfaced of two separate incidents involving spreading fire and smoke in Gozo over the long weekend. The first shows a huge fire in Nadur fields spreading as the village celebrates the traditional feast of Mnarja. Villagers looked on to a scene combining fireworks and a burning valley, with only one fire engine arriving on scene to put out the flames.

Another shows Gozo’s famous Ramla Bay receiving plumes of smoke following a quickly spreading grass fire on Tuesday afternoon. Starting at around 2pm on a Public Holiday, the blaze spread quickly as the breeze fanned the flames. Firefighters fought the flames until around 3.30pm, with the origin of the flame still unknown.

A prototype flying car has successfully completed a 35-minute flight in between two international Slovakian airports. The appropriately named AirCar completed the trip between Nitra and Bratislava, running on regular petrol-pump fuel and equipped with a BMW engine. Creator Prof Stefan Klein stated that the hybrid aircraft can fly about 1000km at a height of 8,200ft.

Taking 2 minutes and 15 seconds to convert between car and aircraft, the narrow wings fold down along the sides of the car and reached a cruising speed of 170km/h. Driven by Klein himself, the AirCar drove straight off the runway and into town upon arrival. It can carry up to two people but requires a runway, unlike drone-taxi prototypes which can take off and land vertically.

Animal Protection Society calls for caution during hot summer months

The MSPCA has issued a warning on social media, advising pet-owners to remain cautious of the heatwave’s implications on such animals and also posted a number of tips.

The Malta Society for the Protection and Care of Animals advised that dogs and cats “only have sweat glands on the pads of their feet” and rely on panting to regulate body temperature, warning of potential heat stroke if the tips they posted are not followed.

Amongst other tips, the MSPCA called for everyone to avoid walking dogs during midday sun, access to shaded areas for pets, assurance of plenty of drinking water and application of sun cream to white-coated pets, amongst others.

“The World’s Highest Hotel” opens in Shanghai

The J Hotel Shangai Tower has opened up in China and stated its nature as ‘the highest hotel in the world’, occupying the top floors of the 632-metre Shanghai Tower, the tallest building in China.

The luxurious hotel boasts 165 gorgeous rooms which provide 24/7 butler service, an indoor swimming pool, luxury spa and toiletries from luxury brands Hermes and Diptyque, amongst other amenities.

The J Hotel’s most expensive suite is a 380 square meter marvel which includes a parlour, study, kitchen, physiotherapy area, the exact price of which was not provided when asked by CNN Travel.

Despite claiming its title as the world’s highest, the title of such an establishment may only apply to buildings which are use solely as hotels, unlike the J Hotel which is only a fraction of China’s massive Shanghai tower.
