Speaking during an exclusive episode of MaltaDaily’s ‘The Interview’ with Fabian Demicoli, EP President Roberta Metsola revealed she did not tell her sons that she was going to Ukraine so as not to worry them.

The European Leader is mother to four sons; Luca, Alec, Marc and Kristian, with the latter being the youngest. When asked about how she tackles her roles as a mother and EP president, Metsola explained that she did not want her sons to worry about her trip to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

She stated how she only informed her parents and her husband, Ukko Metsola, about her voyage. She said that her older sons were the two most impacted by the changes in their lives after Metsola was voted into the president position.

In fact, she said, her sons found out she was in Ukraine after their friends read the news and informed them of their mother’s courageous act of visiting the war-torn country.

It was then that she realised that she needed to treat her older sons like adults, she told Fabian, by informing them with updates about her presidential responsibilities.

Describing the voyage to Ukraine, Metsola told Fabian that she faced the visit with no fear at all as she had the responsibility to attend to the suffering people. She was moved by their courage and spirit to defend their country, and was honoured to be in their midst.

Hollywood actress and UN humanitarian Angelina Jolie has just made a surprise visit to the now war-torn country of Ukraine on Saturday.

Visiting Western city of Lviv, Jolie, who has been an UNHCR special envoy for refugees since 2011, went to speak to displaced citizens who found refuge in the city.

Some of the displaced citizens included children undergoing treatment for injuries sustained in missile strikes, particularly from the attacks on Kramatorsk railway station in early April.

The attack had apparently deliberately targeted a crowd of women and children trying to flee, killing at least 52 and wounding many more. Lviv regional governor Maksym Kozytskiy said that she was very moved by the children’s stories.

According to the governor, Jolie also visited a boarding school to talk with students as well as met evacuees arriving at Lviv’s central railway station and the volunteers providing medical help.

Jolie also allegedly told the Ukrainians she would come back to visit. The actress has been known for her humanitarian impulse, but it was revealed that the journey to Lviv was done on her own personal capacity and had no connection to the UNHCR.

During the conversation between the commissioner and Piccione’s family, the police revealed that they had received word that Luca was a fan of the SWAT teams. Consequently, the inspector responsible for the Special Intervention Unit spontaneously presented him with a personal unit badge as a symbol of appreciation.
