Reacting to Robert Abela’s recent comments that 16-year-olds should eventually be able to represent their country in parliament, Minister for Inclusion, Social Wellbeing and Voluntary Organisations Hon. Julia Farrugia Portelli told Malta Daily that she is in agreement with the Prime Minister.
Farrugia Portelli stated that it was one of the policies which was pushed during the Vote 16 pilot project, which allows citizens of 16 years of age to vote in local and European elections. The Minister highlighted that Maltese youths were amongst the first in Europe to be able to vote at 16.
She stated that she looks forward to furthering this conversation and sending a strong message of a reformist country with youth as front-liners.
