As she elegantly glides through Marsascala’s waters, a turtle named Diana by rescue volunteers has been making social media appearances and people are loving it.

Wildlife Rescue Team Malta reported how Nature Trust have been getting reports of a loggerhead female turtle swimming around the harbour bay of Marsascala. The marine creature was certified to be in healthy condition, most likely profiting off the area to hunt fish.

As she becomes the star of many beachgoers’ cameras, Nature Trust issue a plea to boat owners in the area to drive as carefully as possible so as not to hurt the turtle. Malta did not report any turtle nests this year, but it does seem as if Diana is enjoying Maltese waters calmly.

High temperatures to concoct intense autumn storms for Malta

High temperatures to concoct intense autumn storms for Malta
Aug 10 2021 Share

Maltese weather forecasters have reported that the extremely high temperatures are set to draw in massive autumn storms for the island. As cooler air from Europe will start to make its way towards the centre of the Mediterranean, the intermixing of airs will lead to greater weather instability over the Maltese islands.

The storms could also result from an increase in sea temperature as it reaches up to 29 degrees Celsius, 2⁰C higher than the average for this time of year. Beachgoers have already started to notice this, as the waters do not offer the full cooling respite from the heat they usually do. With night temperatures finding it difficult to cool down, the minimum temperatures will stay on a 25 to 27 degrees Celsius continuum. There are no current storm predictions for this upcoming week, with the thunderous weather still ramping up slowly.

Heatwaves have scorched the Maltese environmental landscape

Heatwaves have scorched the Maltese environmental landscape
Aug 10 2021 Share

Zebbug local councillor Steve Zammit Lupi took to Facebook to mourn the loss of acres of environmental land due to the scorching heat waves ravaging the Maltese islands. As other countries touching the Mediterranean also experience blazing fires, forcing hundreds to evacuate their homes, Malta has not been spared of the damaging flames and fumes.

Zammit Lupi pointed out how around 25 tumoli of land were burned in Wied Qirda, along with another 10 tumoli in Girgenti Valley. Mature locust and poplar trees were scorched, with the drought currently underway not helping the situation in any way. Zammit Lupi asks what political measures and acts exist to prevent such incidents and mitigate them when they eventually do happen. He ends his powerful post by stating that if we are not careful, the Maltese environmental landscape can be permanently burned, and what is burned down cannot be reacquired.
