Car oveturns in Mriehel bypass after intense collision

Heavy traffic and delays are expected in Mriehel after a car overturned in the Mriehel Bypass going towards Rabat. The overturning was due to a collision between a Toyota Vitz and an Audi.

Officials from the Malta Police Force and Transport Malta were on site within minutes to redirect traffic and mitigate the situation as much as possible.

Avoiding the Mriehel Bypass area is advised as further delays are expected. Malta Daily has been informed that the individuals were taken to Mater Dei Hospital.

Seven arrested after heroine and cocaine busts in Marsa and Qormi

The Malta Police Force has revealed that it has arrested seven individuals after discovering and seizing a considerable amount of heroin and cocaine ready for sale.

Two separate buildings in Triq it-Tiġrija and Triq is-Serkin were raided On Tuesday, where police officers arrested two men and two women aged between 17 and 24 years of age. Along with 120 baggies of heroin and cocaine, the police found an undisclosed amount of cash, some gold, electronic equipment such as CCTV cameras along with a BMW, Jaguar and Mercedes.

The Animal Welfare department was also on site due to reports of horses and a pit bull at one of the buildings.

On Wednesday, three other men aged between 20 and 30 years old were arrested in Qormi after the Police searched their homes and a car showroom to find what is suspected to be cocaine and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Magisterial inquiries have been set up on both cases, with the four men in the Marsa case expected to be charged today on counts of drug trafficking and money laundering.

“Malta will not become another Amsterdam”, says Rosianne Cutajar

As the Maltese parliament entered its second day of debate on the Bill to regulate the recreational use of cannabis, a divide between the government and the Opposition sparked an argument over the future of Malta. Nationalist MP Claudio Grech argued that the Bill, which will permit home-growing and limited dispensation from non-profits, lacks consideration towards cannabis liberalisation. He went on to state that the party is opposing the reform “out of responsibility, not popularity.”

Grech stood by the PN’s position against the bill while Labour MP Rosianne Cutajar, who previously led the drugs reform, highlighted that the government is not promoting cannabis use and will not turn into “another Amsterdam.” Cutajar highlighted that the decriminalised cannabis quantity of 3.5g was “ridiculous” while this bill will allow the police to focus on larger-scale crimes.

Elsewhere, the Mayor of Amsterdam Flemke Halsema proposed the imposition of a ban on tourists visiting cannabis cafes due to reported “years of antisocial behaviour” from the visitors. The mayor and ecologist highlighted the desire to attract tourists based on cultural richness, beauty and institution rather than drug culture and increased demand on marijuana.
