WATCH: Artists gather in Valletta to call for equal rights & sustainable events plan

Earlier today, artists and operators from the arts & entertainment sector gathered in front of Valletta’s parliament building in a peaceful protest to call for equal rights for artists and workers in the local scene along with a sustainable events plan going forward.

Amongst other speakers, X factor & Malta’s Got Talent Judge Howard Keith Debono along with local DJ Tenishia highlighted the discrimination being made against artists & operators from the local authorities.

Joven Grech, better known as Tenishia told Malta Daily that artist remains persistent in the face of discrimination and called for a level playing field for local artists and went on to state that he will never give up on the situation.

Howard Keith stated how the arts & entertainment industry is considered at the bottom of the chain, even internationally, also stating that the scene has been closed for 15 months with COVID-19 cases still rising locally.

The judge and artist manager stated that, much like other workers in different local industries have the right to work, so should local artists like singers, dancers, DJs and so much more along with event operators who have also felt the pandemic’s effects.

The Health Authorities have announced new event-related measures which introduce the concept of ‘bubbles’.

The new measures dictate that, as from July 5, events with bubbles of 100 people can be operated as long as each 100-person bubble is totally separated from the other where audiences enter and exit from different outlets, along with service from different staff members.

These bubble numbers will increase to a maximum of 150 as of July 19 and 200 from August 2. Events include those cultural, artistic, theatre and music-related, conferences, award ceremonies and sporting activities.

During the past two weeks, Malta has experienced a record-breaking June heatwave and one of the longest spells of heat in Malta in over a decade.

The Meteorological Office has revealed that there have been five June heat waves over the past 10 years, the majority of which lasting for three days, as opposed to this year’s heatwave which lasted a strong 12 days.

A spokesperson for the office stated that this has been one of Malta’s most prolonged heatwaves, with June 25 being the hottest June day in almost 100 years at a blazing 40.2°C.

The famed ‘Hamrun Jeep’ captured in multiple videos during the Hamrun Spartans Football Club Premier League trophy celebrations in St. Joseph High Street is currently in a wrecked state after multiple people were seen jumping on its exterior on Thursday evening.

The Jeep served as a colour-appropriate platform for revelling Hamrun Spartans supporters after the Spartans’ BOV Premier League trophy presentation following a 30-year wait for Hamrun football supporters.

It has been reported that 124 fines were issued to individuals who reportedly broke COVID-19 regulations during the celebrations, which event also raised nation-wide concerns regarding the country’s current COVID-19 measures.
