Starting October 1, vouchers for registered cat feeders are being distributed as part of a government initiative announced by Minister Anton Refalo and Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said. This scheme, with a budget of €350,000, aims to support those who care for stray cats across Malta and Gozo.

The Directorate for the Appropriate Treatment of Animals gathered data from Local Councils on the number of cat feeders and strays. Over 2,200 feeders have registered, caring for approximately 36,000 cats. Each Local Council received vouchers proportional to the number of registered feeders.

Minister Refalo emphasized the importance of this initiative, highlighting the government’s commitment to animal welfare and fulfilling its promises. Parliamentary Secretary Bugeja Said expressed gratitude to the feeders for their dedication and reiterated the government’s ongoing support.

Director Joseph John Vella encouraged feeders to collect their vouchers from their Local Councils. These vouchers are valid throughout October and can be redeemed at participating establishments listed with the Local Councils.

Families Feel Unsafe as Police Stations in Key Localities Remain Closed
Oct 2 2024 Share

The police stations in San Ġwann, Msida, Swieqi, Ħal Għargħur, and Gżira remain closed, affecting approximately 55,000 residents in these growing localities.

During a press conference, Shadow Minister for Home Affairs Darren Carabott and Shadow Minister for Family and Social Security Albert Buttigieg alleged that these closures are impacting public safety, leading to rising concerns over vandalism, theft, and other security issues.

The closures have also reportedly placed additional pressure on nearby police stations in Sliema and St Julian’s, which are struggling to meet the heightened demands. While Community Police are working hard, they are allegedly unable to fully replace the services of dedicated stations.

The Partit Nazzjonalista has called on Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri and Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà to prioritize reopening the stations, claiming that this is essential for ensuring residents’ safety.
