Vittoriosa ended a 40-year wait to win the Victory Day Regatta in dramatic fashion, securing victory in the final race, Tal-Pass B’Erbgħa, at Valletta Grand Harbour on Sunday.
The team crossed the finish line first, narrowly beating a strong Senglea contingent that took second place. Cospicua, chasing Senglea’s record of 23 shields, finished third.
This victory marks Vittoriosa’s second consecutive success after sharing last year’s shield with Cospicua. However, it is the first time they have lifted the Victory Day Regatta shield outright since their triumph in 1984.
In the ‘B’ category, Cospicua clinched the shield after winning two of the five races, including the decisive final race.
Despite Kalkara and Marsamxett being in strong positions to win the shield before the final race, Kalkara’s collision with Vittoriosa and Marsamxett’s third-place finish opened the door for Cospicua’s victory.
Vittoriosa also claimed the women’s shield with a dominant performance from rowers Shazel Grima and Glynnis Mizzi, representing Birgu.
