This year marks a significant step forward for Gozo’s involvement in the Games, as it will be participating for the first time with a women’s football team and also in the golf discipline. This milestone reflects the island’s growing ambition, determination, and inclusive vision for sports development.

First held in 1985, the International Island Games bring together member islands from around the globe every two years. The association currently includes 24 islands.

Minister Camilleri proudly stated, “Four years ago, we worked tirelessly to secure Gozo’s full membership in the International Island Games Association. Today, Gozo is set to participate for the second time in this prestigious event, which this year will be hosted on the island of Orkney, off the north coast of Scotland.”

He recalled that during Gozo’s debut at the 2023 Games in Guernsey, the island not only took its first step as a competing contingent but also returned home with four medals one gold, two silver, and one bronze.

Minister Camilleri went on to highlight how sport plays a central role in the vision for Gozo’s development. This includes substantial investment in projects such as the Sports and Aquatic Pavilion, which is in its final stages and set to begin phased opening in the coming weeks. The project has already received praise from international experts and is expected to transform the sporting culture in Gozo.

In this context, the Minister also announced a strategic collaboration with the Ministry for Education and Sport with the aim of attracting a world-class international sporting event to the Maltese islands. He emphasised that these efforts are all for the benefit of the local sports community, which works relentlessly to represent Gozo with pride.
