Valletta lit up for festive season as part of 'Christmas in the Capital'

The streets of Malta’s capital city of Valletta have been illuminated with decorative Christmas lights as part of the seasonal campaign ‘Christmas in the Capital’.

Organised by the Valletta Cultural Agency, a number of events will be held each week in the build-up to Christmas and the New Year, featuring a number of local acts including singers, dancers, children’s choirs and more.

The first event was set to feature local band SterjoTipi at Great Siege Square, but has been tentatively postponed 1st December due to the current weather conditions.

Leonard Camilleri identified as man who died in Kirkop fireworks factory explosion

An elderly man has died after a fireworks factory in Kirkop exploded earlier today while three others have been injured.

In a number of Facebook posts following the explosion, it was revealed that Leonard Camilleri, a previous factory licencee, fell victim to the explosion. Officials from the Civil Protection Department and Malta Police Force, together with a medical team, convened on site to investigate, with Camilleri initially being unaccounted for before he was later found.

“With great sadness, the St. Joseph Musical Society is announcing the loss of our beloved Leonard Camilleri, ex-licensee of the St. Joseph Fireworks Factor Kirkop”, a post by the group read.

Camilleri had recently made a return to producing fireworks after he had retired from his hobby a few years back.

Inclusion Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli took to Facebook to send her condolences, writing “we were praying that no one got hurt in the St. Joseph fireworks factory explosion in Kirkop. Unfortunately, the elderly man was found dead. Our thoughts are with the volunteers and civil works who are leading this delicate operation in this stormy weather.”

RIP Leonard.

Drivers in Malta were met with quite a precarious situation on Saturday morning after having to drive through a flooded Imsida main road.

A video, taken by Skyline webcams, shows a number of cars, taxis and even a food delivery motorcycle attempting to traverse through the difficult conditions.

Earlier today, local weather page ‘It-Temp Madwarna’ reported that today’s conditions signify the most severe kind of storm, with multiple warnings advised to the public to remain home.

Watch: Miguel Borg’s classmates deliver touching tribute during graduation ceremony

On Friday, Bachelor of Engineering graduates came together in the University of Malta’s Sir Temi Zammit Hall during their graduation ceremony to pay tribute to their late colleague and friend, Miguel Borg.

Borg had graduated in late October, with University Rector Prof. Alfred J. Vella visiting Miguel at his home to hold a private ceremony before he sadly lost his battle with terminal illness.

“…and on the subject of passion, what better example could we have had from you? A beacon of courage, determination and perseverance,” a fellow student stated to an emotional crowd.

“This makes today so much more special for us, thank you Miguel. I have no doubt that we and your friends will continue to celebrate your memory, even when we feel that we need to be courageous in our lives.”

RIP Miguel.
