During a conference addressed by Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Dr. Chris Fearne regarding mental health awareness and education, Dr. Fearne revealed that today, Malta’s active cases numbers will drop below 200 for the first time in 9 months.

He went on to highlight that as from Monday 17th, vaccine registrations will open for the entire Maltese population aged 16 and over and reported that while there is no call for vaccine boosters at the moment, Malta has secured 1,000,000 doses for 2022 and 2023 if the country needs it.

Dr. Fearne also stated that over 395,000 vaccine doses have been given with at least 61% having had their first vaccine dose.

UK asked by UNICEF to give 20% of vaccines to other countries

UK asked by UNICEF to give 20% of vaccines to other countries

According to UNICEF, the UK should make a commitment to give 20% of its vaccines to other countries which are in need by early June. UNICEF stated that the UK would still have enough jabs to vaccinate every the adult by July’s end, and will have enough spare doses to fully vaccinate 50 million people around the world. UNICEF made the call before the G7 summit and stated that the UK could set an example to the other countries in the organisation.

UNICEF pointed out that vaccinating populations globally ensures that no new variant emerges, which are proving to be easier to spread and far deadlier than the original COVID-19 virus. France has already announced a donation of up to 5% to COVAX, urging Europe and US to do the same.
