Vaccine rollout picking up pace throughout Europe

Vaccine rollout picking up pace throughout Europe
May 4 2021 Share

The Netherlands reopened alfresco hospitality with Belgians ignoring official advice and driving a short distance across the border to enjoy their neighbouring country’s freedom. According to Guardian graphics, Malta’s vaccination rollout is among the highest in Europe as it has vaccinated 76.9 persons out of every hundred. The Netherlands is, according to latest data, administering a jab every half a second to its population of 17.2 million.

Around 20% of the population in each EU country, with only a few exceptions such as Bulgaria and Croatia, have been vaccinated. Malta is leading the way in this sector as 52.43% of the country’s population has been vaccinated. A European Commission official stated that vaccination in the EU is increasing dramatically as the battle against COVID-19 continues.

UK to green light travel to less than 10 EU countries

UK to green light travel to less than 10 EU countries
May 4 2021 Share

Malta is likely to be one of the few countries the UK will green light travel to this coming summer. Summer plans for the UK were given a boost on Monday as the EU confirmed travel for vaccinated people will include Europe as of June. The green light however will be given to fewer than 10 countries. The EU will reopen to holidaymakers from countries with low infection rates, with a traffic light system announced this week. Senior Uk government sources said that the number of green lit countries will probably be in single digits.

Boris Johnson stated on Monday that he does not wish to see an influx of diseases and thus the reopening to travel should be done cautiously. Malta might be listed alongside Portugal and Gibraltar as countries which Britons might be able to access in the EU. Further information on other country’s status is set to be issued.

Restaurants and cafes are set to reopen until 5pm with bars and clubs remaining shut. Access to Gozo will not be restricted, along with the resuming of non-contact sports. Mask wearing is set to remain a health measure for a while as Fearne stated that health authorities are being eased due to social distancing and masks still being in place.
