Assembling his staff, they promptly evacuated the person involved in the accident and offered their assistance until professional medical support arrived on the scene. Policeman congratulated after a rare act of immediate enforcement

Policeman congratulated after a rare act of immediate enforcement
Jul 12 2021 Share

After spotting a truck leaving a trail of cement as it drove around Marsaxlokk on his way to work, police sergeant Chris Grech took it upon himself to chase and make the driver clean up the mess left behind him. The truck was dropping cement all over Triq il-Kavalerrizza and, if it hadn’t been for Grech’s quick response, would have continued recklessly along, making the roads a hazard to other drivers.

The Marsaxlokk local council praised the policeman for the rare act of immediate enforcement by posting about the response on Facebook last Friday. Commenters also stated that it is refreshing seeing such acts being properly punished for once, especially immediately. The police officer is a member of the police’s Environment Protection Unit.

Deaths due to hunger are surpassing COVID-19 fatalities

Deaths by hunger increase six-fold since start of COVID-19 pandemic
Jul 12 2021 Share

A new Oxfam study reported that 11 people are likely dying every minute from hunger, outpacing even COVID-19 fatalities ever since the pandemic began. The pandemic is approximately killing around seven people per minute. The ‘Hunger Virus Multiplies’ report states that conflict remains the primary cause of famine since the pandemic, pushing over half a million people into famine-like conditions. This is a significant six-fold increase since 2020. There are approximately 155 million people globally who live in crisis levels of food insecurity or worse.

This is a 20 million more than 2020, with around 2 out of every 3 going hungry mainly due to war and conflict. The pandemic worsened the situation, delivering economical damage to the countries in question and adding further issues of mass unemployment and distributed food production. Meanwhile, global food prices have surged by 40% due to the pandemic. Ethiopia, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen are amongst of these hunger hotspots.
