On 7 June 1919, a pivotal chapter in Malta’s history was written.

A wave of Maltese citizens, driven by poverty and frustration that gripped the islands following the First World War, rose up to challenge the British colonial government.

Though paid at a bitter cost, with some even losing their lives including four protestors this outpouring of popular determination marked a crucial step towards Malta’s eventual independence.

Each year on 7 June, Malta solemnly commemorates Sette Giugno, a moment when ordinary citizens stood up against soaring prices and economic hardship under colonial rule.

Jun 7 2025 Share

On Saturday morning in Marsaskala, the Tuna Festival kicked off, with hundreds showing up to attend the first edition of this festival, organised by the Ministry for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights together with the Marsaskala Local Council.

This festival celebrated the work of local fishermen alongside the tuna, which was then in season. Many associations and local producers were given the opportunity to showcase their local products alongside other stalls exhibiting various items related to the fishing sector. The public was also able to buy fresh tuna directly from the vendors present at the festival.

During the opening of the Tuna Festival, the Parliamentary Secretary for Fisheries, Aquaculture and Animal Rights, Alicia Bugeja Said, said, “Events like these continue to showcase the very important work of our fishermen while increasing awareness about this sector which is so important to our country.” She added that festivals like this gave a new lease of life to the sector and continued to shed more light on the important work done by local fishermen, so that Maltese and Gozitan families were provided with local and fresh produce for their consumption.

The activity will continue until 9pm tonight with entertainment by Dan and San along with a lively march from the Banda of the Sant’Anna Music Society, singers such as Claudia Faniello, Gaia Cauchi, Lisa Gauci, Fabrizio Faniello, Marisa D’Amato, and Veronica and Joe.
