UM Wolves RFC Women’s Team Crowned National Rugby Champions

The University of Malta Wolves RFC’s Women’s Team were crowned as Malta’s national women’s rugby champions on Saturday as the domestic season came to a close.

In a close-fought season spread across 10 weekends between October and April, UM Wolves RFC – which is the University of Malta’s officially recognised student-run rugby club – went unbeaten in the second half of the season to claim the league title.

The team were crowned champions on Saturday after they beat opposition Stompers 39-7 with the league title already mathematically secure.

First entering local competition in 2019, UM Wolves RFC’s women’s team was the first women’s team to represent the University of Malta in any national league.  The league title is the first trophy ever won by the young club.

Yesterday, Sean Meachen, of The Busker fame, and local TV presenter and lawyer, Paula Cauchi, exchanged vows in a heartwarming ceremony.

The couple, engaged since August 2020, made it official on Sunday, April 14th, in a picturesque Valletta setting.

Sean is one-third of The Busker, alongside Jean Paul Borg and Dav.Jr, who represented Malta in the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest. Their victory in the Malta Eurovision with the song “Dance (Our Own Party)” earned them the honour.

Local heroes Neil Agius and Fabio Spiteri embarked on a 12-hour community charity swim yesterday, aiming to raise funds and awareness for Inspire Malta.

Neil Agius, an ultra-distance swimmer holding the world record for the longest unassisted ocean swim, and Fabio Spiteri, a seasoned triathlon coach and record holder, accomplished this feat. For Spiteri, it marked his longest swim to date.

Their objective was to advocate for swimming accessibility for all children, emphasising its potential to provide safety and enjoyment for families, with all proceeds are intended to improve swimming programs and facilities for children through Inspire Malta.

Starting at 7 am and concluding at 7 pm, the 12-hour swim took place at Neptunes Pool in St. Julian’s. Throughout the day, various individuals, from Neil and Fabio’s friends to young swimmers, joined in to offer encouragement and support. Notable figures, including opposition leader Bernard Grech, were present to cheer on Neil and Fabio.

The swim concluded at 7 pm, with Neil Agius having swum a total of 44 km during the marathon.

Falcons RFC have once again demonstrated their dominance in Maltese rugby by clinching their fourth consecutive Rugby Cisk League title. This weekend, the team celebrated their continued success by sharing a team photo on social media, jubilantly captioned “Champions once again” with the hashtag #4inarow, highlighting their impressive streak of victories.

Since the 2019/2020 season, Falcons RFC has consistently topped the Cisk Lager League, showcasing their strength and consistency in the sport. Their latest triumph adds another chapter to their ongoing legacy in Maltese rugby, confirming their status as a formidable force in the league.

The club’s sustained success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players, coaching staff, and everyone involved. Falcons RFC’s achievement in securing four titles in a row marks them as one of the standout teams in the league’s history, setting a high bar for excellence and competitiveness in Maltese rugby.
