Ukraine Eurovision winner Jamala to headline peace concert in Malta

The winner of the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest, Jamala, will be coming to Malta to perform a peace concert on the 8th of July in an attempt to campaign for her country and spread awareness around the world.

One Love, Celebrating Peace with special guest 2016 Eurovision winner Jamala

The One Love, Celebrating Peace concert will be held at Malta Enterprise grounds in Pieta’ in aid of Ukrainian citizens who fled to Malta because of the war. Jamala will be joined by a line-up of local favourites in what is expected to be a celebration of unity, solidarity and peace.

The Maltese artists set to take the stage include Ryan Hili, Petra, Gaia Cauchi, Aidan and Claudia Faniello, together with guitarist Kersten Graham and DJ Stevy Vee.

Funds will also be raised for the building of ‘Becs’ Junior Secondary School in Ethiopia, in memory of 15-year-old Rebecca Zammit Lupi who sadly lost her battle with a rare form of cancer in 2021. Donations are welcome through BOV Bank Account 40014014194 – IBAN MT91VALL22013000000040014014194

Apart from the concert, Malta Enterprise will also be hosting a photographic exhibition by international photojournalists Darrin Zammit Lupi and Heidi Levine.

The exhibition will cover the Civilian Perspective of Ongoing and Recent Wars, attempting to create a timeless portrayal of human suffering as they capture the pain and anguish of a people who are forced into war. Maltese photographer Zammit Lupi visited the Polish borders to capture refugees fleeing their country whilst Levin, currently on assignment in Ukraine for the Washington Post, has been living in a war-torn Ukraine capturing stories of a nation impacted by war.

Malta Enterprise invites the public to visit this unique exhibition which is being organised at the Malta Enterprise premises in G’Mangia from the 9th July until 23rd July 2022. Opening hours: 09h00 – 12hrs & 18hrs – 20hrs Monday to Friday. On Saturdays and Sunday the exhibition is open from 18h00 to 20h00.

Car fire safely extinguished by Civil Protection Department in Hamrun

Footage sent to this newsroom shows a car ablaze in Hamrun main road as police and firefighters combat the massive blaze.

The fire has since been extinguished by the Civil Protection Department, and no injuries were reported. Still, the fire could be seen producing a massive plume of black smoke as authorities deal with the situation.

Woman dies while swimming in Qawra despite rescue attempt

A woman has sadly lost her life whilst swimming in the Triq Dawret il-Gzejjer area, situated between Bugibba and Qawra.

Police said that the woman, a 66-year-old, was swimming in the area when she faced difficulties in swimming.

Police immediately convened on site and preliminary investigations found that some people had spotted the woman face down n the water. Members from the Malta Red Cross nearby found the woman and brought her onto land.

Despite giving her medical aid doing their best to save her life, the woman was certified dead on the scene. A medical team from Mater Dei Hospital’s Emergency arrived on site to continue administering CPR before she was unfortunately deemed deceased.

Condolences to the woman’s family. Investigations are ongoing.

Amber Heard’s lawyers demand Johnny Depp trial verdict be overturned

Amber Heard is seeking for an appeal of or to even have the verdict thrown out from the recent defamation lawsuit between her and ex-husband Johnny Depp.

Following a 2016 op-ed Heard wrote for the Washington Post, in which she claimed she became a victim of domestic abuse, a trial between them captured the attention of millions all over the world.

Running for six weeks, the trial centred around Depp claiming that the op-ed implied he physically and sexually abused the actress. Depp was awarded $15m in damages after a jury of 7 ruled in his favour.

In a 43-page memorandum filed on Friday July 1st, Heard’s lawyers argued that the final ruling should be entirely set aside. The $10m she was ordered to pay were also demanded to be overturned after being called inconsistent and irreconcilable.

“Mr. Depp presented no evidence that Ms. Heard did not believe she was abused,” the attorneys wrote. “Therefore, Mr. Depp did not meet the legal requirements for actual malice, and the verdict should be set aside.”

Heard also claims that the juror’s award against her was excessive, having been handed down after a split verdict that found she and Depp defamed each other.

The trial found that both celebrities were guilty of defaming each other, however Depp very much came out as the winner in terms of damages. Heard was awarded $2 million in damages from Depp.
