UK to offer over-50s third COVID-19 vaccine dose

The UK has announced that everyone over the age of 50 will be offered a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in autumn in an attempt to completely neutralise the infection threat by Christmas. With more than 50 million doses administered so far and 95% of over 50s vaccinated by April, the first jab of vaccine rollout has been picking up pace in the UK. Chief medical officer for England Chris Whitty stated that the booster regimen could be enough to undercut the threat of virus variants.

Two options are currently under trial, with the first being a specifically modified vaccine to tackle variants and the second being a third jab for the Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines. More information about the booster shot programme is yet to be issued, but government officials are hoping that this will make COVID-19 fade into the background like any other illness.

Anthea Zammit heads towards Hollywood to compete in Miss Universe 69th Edition

Anthea Zammit has just embarked on the journey to compete in the 69th edition of Miss Universe, with the final being held on 16th May at Hollywood, FL in USA. Anthea Zammit, Miss Universe Malta 2021, will be competing in the May 2021 edition which was supposed to have taken place last year but got delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year’s winner was South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzi.

After winning the right to represent Malta last August after representing Haz-Zebbug, Anthea will be involved in various photoshoots, interviews, events, etc. as she competes for the title. All COVID-19 health measurements will be adhered to throughout the competition. Miss Universe Malta’s director Alan J. Darmanin wishes Anthea the best of luck on her journey.

Donald Trump launches platform to work around his Twitter ban

After being banned off of social media platforms, former US President Donald Trump has launched his new communications platform in order to work around his banning. ‘From The Desk of Donald J. Trump’ has just been launched, giving the 74-year-old ex-president the space to say anything he wants. There is a catch however – the platform allows subscribers to share his posts on Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms.

Users will not be able to comment or react to the posts on his blog but they are able to share them around. Trump branded his new ‘From the Desk’ as a ‘beacon of freedom’ during a ‘time of lies and silence.’ It is unclear whether Facebook or Twitter will allow users to continue sharing his blogs, but the launch comes in the same week as Facebook’s Oversight Board was set to announce whether to keep Trump off the platforms.

World renowned restaurant Eleven Madison Park is going vegan

The three-Michelin-star New York restaurant Eleven Madison Park will make its grand reopening after more than a year by going plant-based. Most of the dishes it became known for, such as its iconic roasted duck with daikon and plum, will no longer be available on the menu. This will make the restaurant one of the first ever high-profile eateries to go vegan, with chef and owner Daniel Humm stating that he is immensely excited to share the decision of turning towards a plant-based menu.

Vegetarianism and veganism seem to be no longer fringe diets as more and more restaurants are seemingly making the shift. Humm stated in an interview that ‘the way people eat meat is not sustainable’. Acknowledging the risk this moves entails, Humm believes the decision is worth it as he aims to ‘redefine luxury as an experience that serves a higher purpose and maintains a genuine connection to the community.’
