UK registers only 15 COVID-19 cases from events attended by 60,000

May 22 2021 Share

Out of a 60,000-strong attendance from nine different pilot events, the UK recorded just 15 new COVID-19 cases, British officials have confirmed on Friday.

The government permitted limited crowds at multiple events including the Brit Awards, two FA Cup games and the World Snooker Championships to research COVID-19 transmission after easing restrictions.

The UK was one of the hardest-hit countries in Europe, but has been gradually easing lockdown measures in line with an encouraging and successful vaccination programme, with Boris Johnson expected to announce further relaxation of restrictions next week.

May 21 2021 Share

Amidst the social media uproar in regards to the entertainment and cultural sector being completely ruled out for the upcoming summer of 2021, a new campaign has launched, aiming to restart the cultural and social life safely. Appropriately titled, ‘Restart’ is comprised of ‘highly-skilled individuals whose businesses and livelihoods have been seriously damaged.’

Many in the industry have been sidelined ever since March of 2021, leading to financial, psychological and emotional damage to many as they struggled to maintain their livelihood intact. Now they are all standing with one voice in unison, waiting for the time to re-open the industry and provide not only art and entertainment to the Maltese public, but also the livelihood of many.

May 21 2021 Share

Ex-US President Donald Trump is being sued by a civil rights organisation ‘Chinese American Civil Rights Coalition (CACRC)’ for calling COVID-19 the ‘China Flu’. Trump made several remarks when the outbreak began, calling the pandemic things like ‘China virus’, ‘Wuhan virus’, and even ‘Kung Flu’. The civil rights coalition stated that these statements resulted in several instances of harm on Chinese Americans and other Asian Americans as many associated them with the pandemic’s damages.

The former president is being sued for ‘defamation and infliction of emotional distress’. The group is seeking $1 for every Asian American and Pacific Islander living in the USA, equating to a whopping $22.9 million. Should the suit be successful, a museum will be established showcasing Asian American history and contribution to the States.

Following a massive uproar due to the news that the entertainment sector being ruled out for summer 2021, PN leader Bernard Grech took to Facebook to comment on the situation. The Opposition Leader stated that the entertainment, art and culture sector is essential for the full development of a person and the livelihood of many. He pointed out that in the same way that other sectors have a plan or solution as to how to cope with the pandemic, the cultural sector should be treated in the same fashion.

Grech asked why the government did not issue a concrete plan as to how activities can restart in a secure manner in Malta. In concluding, Grech added that this is a case in which the good suffer because of the misconduct of others. Numerous artists have spoken up, from performers to DJs, to ask why the decision was taken and whether it is possible to change the situation towards a better plan.
