Two Youth-Led Projects Drive Climate Action In Msida

Jun 9 2025 Share

Two youth-led projects focusing on the Msida locality have secured funding through the European Commission’s DEAR Programme, under the umbrella of the SUBLIME project.

With the support of the Msida Local Council and local NGO Kopin, representatives from the two youth organisations presented their project plans to local authorities.

A contract signing ceremony, held on 27th May, was officiated by Msida Mayor Charles Selvaggi and Executive Secretary Josette Micallef.

The EcoXperience initiative, spearheaded by the National Youth Council of Malta, offers experiential, non-formal learning focused on environmental action. The project will culminate in a youth-led sustainability fair featuring information stands, open discussions and debates offering a dynamic platform for young people to engage with the wider community and raise awareness about environmental issues.

Meanwhile, Root, Repair, Reconnect, led by Friends of the Earth Malta, promotes sustainable consumption through practical workshops on repairing and reusing household items. The project also encourages intercultural exchange through nature walks and advocates for sustainable mobility via the creation of a digital bicycle lane booklet highlighting eco-friendly commuting routes in Msida.

The journey has already begun, with participants engaging in online training centred on the Inner Development Goals (IDGs). These goals complement the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by underlining the importance of personal growth and inner capacity in fostering societal change. Maltese youth have also had the opportunity to connect with peers from 11 other countries, exchanging stories and strategies for sustainability.

Paceville police were kept busy over the weekend, beginning on the evening of Friday, 6th June, when officers on routine patrol spotted two individuals selling balloons filled with nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas.

Observations confirmed that the gas was being purchased and consumed on site. The sellers were stopped and 18 bottles of the substance were confiscated.

Later that evening, two individuals already known to police were found to be breaching their court-imposed bail conditions. Both were promptly arrested.

Around midnight, another man was observed trafficking cannabis. He was arrested and taken to court, where he pleaded guilty and received a 14-month prison sentence and a €500 fine.

At approximately 5:30am on Saturday, a man reported being robbed near Spinola Gardens.

Police accompanied the victim to patrol the area, leading to the quick identification of the suspect, who was found in possession of the stolen wallet and mobile phone. He was arrested, admitted to the charges in court, and was sentenced to three years in prison.

On Saturday evening, police were called to the scene of a traffic accident involving two cars. An argument broke out between those involved, and two of the five individuals were arrested for non-cooperation.

One of them assaulted an officer and was sentenced to three years’ probation after pleading guilty, with a protection order issued for the police.

Refugee Week Malta (RWM25) returns for its fourth consecutive year this June, running from Monday 16th to Sunday 22nd June 2025. The week-long festival will feature events across multiple locations in Malta, including Valletta, Ħamrun, Ta’ Xbiex, Floriana, and Marsaskala.

As the local edition of the world’s largest arts and cultural festival celebrating the creativity, resilience, and contributions of people seeking safety, RWM25 continues to foster spaces for encounter and dialogue.

The festival aims to bring individuals from all walks of life together to share stories, build connections, and nurture understanding.

The theme for 2025, Community as a Superpower, invites us to recognise community as a powerful, living force—one that counters the increasing sense of isolation felt by many in today’s fast-paced society.

In Malta, where daily life can often feel rushed and impersonal, this year’s theme serves as a poignant reminder that building caring, connected communities is both urgent and transformative. It is an everyday act of kindness, courage, and solidarity. Community, after all, is not just where we live—it is how we live, together.

A key development in this year’s edition is the formation of the Refugee Week Malta Advisory Group: a collaborative network of individuals from asylum-seeking communities, alongside local organisations working across migration, arts, and culture.

This year’s edition proudly partners with the African Media Association Malta, and works in collaboration with 18 collectives, organisations, and public entities involved in migration, human rights, the arts, culture, food, and the environment. These include: Malta Refugee Council, Spark15, Ġustizzja għall-Palestina, MOAS, Blue Door Education, Migrant Women Association Malta, Migtantour Malta, MGRM, Geġwiġija Library, Unfinished Art Space, PONKS Collective, AISO Academy, Malta International Arts Festival, Nenu the Artisan Baker, Friends of the Earth Malta, JustNature, the University of Malta, and Gżira Local Council.
