Dr Carmel Abela, chairman of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Department, has stated on an interview with Television Malta that two thirds of COVID-19 patients at the Intensive Care Unit end up on a ventilator. When an infection in the lung is potent enough to restrain the patient from respirating, the ventilator is necessary to keep them alive.
With around 16 to 20 patients with COVID-19 at Mater Dei’s ITU, and their age averaging around 57, doctors are trained to treat patients who are in the most critical condition. The patient is kept asleep through anaesthesia as the procedure is carried out.
