9 in 10 people alive today were born during Queen Elizabeth’s reign

9 in 10 people alive today were born during Queen Elizabeth’s reign
Sep 9 2022 Share

At least nine out of ten people alive in the world today were born while Queen Elizabeth II reigned over the United Kingdom.

Elizabeth ascended to the throne in 1952, following the death of her father King George VI. Back then, Winston Churchill was prime minister, with Harry S Truman US President and Joseph Stalin ruling over the Soviet Union.

The queen has seen so many events and people coming and going in her 70 years on the throne. At the same time, the vast majority of the world’s current population was being born.

At least nine out of ten people alive today have never known any other monarch reigning over the UK besides Queen Elizabeth II, with Elizabeth becoming the most recognisable face in the world.

According to the CIA’s world fact-book, 9.7% of the world’s population are aged 65 and over. Since the queen reigned for 70 years, this means that at least nine in 10 people alive today were born while she was on the throne.

Those born into the world now will grow up with King Charles III as the UK’s monarch, with future generations likely to see his son Prince William take the throne and followed by his son George.
